Google Special Hours vs Temporarily Closed: Which Should You Use?
Use special hours for changed hours on specific dates. Google’s special-hours article recommends them for closures of up to six consecutive days and Temporarily closed from seven days. Its closure article instead recommends special hours for seven days or fewer and temporary closure for more than seven.
The official guides disagree at exactly seven days, as checked on 2026-10-01. We do not present that boundary as settled. Check the current linked guidance for your account before choosing the setting for a seven-day closure. Both distinguish a short exception from a longer or unknown-duration shutdown. Neither is a reason to mark an operating business permanently closed.
Match the setting to the interruption
| Situation | Setting to consider |
|---|---|
| Closing early on one date | Special hours |
| Closed for up to six consecutive days | Special hours |
| Closed for exactly seven days | Official guides disagree; check current guidance before choosing |
| Closed for more than seven days | Temporarily closed |
| Reopening date unknown | Temporarily closed |
The manual alternative is free
Both changes can be managed directly in Google Business Profile. Follow the official guides linked below for the right setting and your account’s controls. The key distinction is date-specific hours versus the business’s broader operating status.
Avoid switching a profile’s operating status simply because one day has shorter hours. Conversely, don’t stretch a collection of short exceptions into an indefinite shutdown. Decide what is true before choosing the control.
What happens after the interruption?
A dated hours exception describes its specific date; it does not rewrite the normal weekly schedule. A broader closure status needs its own reopening action. Check the customer-facing result when operations resume rather than assuming every destination follows the same model.
If the reopening date is uncertain, write a notice that says so. Promising a date because the interface needs one creates a separate customer problem. Keep a record of where you published the closure so you can check each destination when you reopen.
Why this matters for a temporary-hours tool
The tempting shortcut is a generic “closed” switch sent everywhere. That hides an important distinction. HoursBeacon’s preview is focused on today’s exception; it does not change a real profile, demonstrate an extended closure, or guarantee automatic restoration on another platform.
We are investigating Google first because its dated hours model fits this narrow job. Website notices and possible later platforms need their own status and expiry behavior. The useful test is whether that focused workflow saves repeated effort after you know the free alternative—not whether a preview can make every platform look connected.

Need to explain the exception beyond Google?
Choose the correct Google setting first. HoursBeacon is exploring a focused temporary-hours workflow for the repeated edits, with Google first and a website component planned. It is Coming Soon and does not change an operating status or guarantee restoration on any real platform.
Try the HoursBeacon preview — no real hours are updated.
Frequently asked questions
What about exactly seven closed days?
The two official articles still disagree at that boundary as of 1 October 2026. Check the linked current guidance for your account rather than treating it as settled.
Will a temporary closure status reopen itself?
A closure status needs its own reopening action. A dated special-hours entry and a broader closure status have different behavior; check the customer view when operations resume.
